Legionnary 2010

As I mentioned above, this weekend was my first tournament outing with the Orks. Took part in the 1000pts Exeter Legionary, the format was three games with various scenarios all based around the standard missions. I'm not one for writting in depth battle reports, so i'll give a brief overview of each game.

Game 1 - annihilation, dawn of war.
Opponent - Imperial guard, lots of troops, a leman russ and a demolisher. I won the roll off and elected to go first. I deployed 60 boyz and my big mek half way up the board, he deployed as many infantary as he could. I ran my boyz forward first turn (the the rest of my armyrunning on to the board), he wipped out about 25 boyz from his shooting, the leman russ and demolisher doing particularly well. Second turn I called my waagh and managed to multiple assault and wipe
out four guard unit. This then only really left the two tanks as the major threats. He rolled the tanks forward and attempted to kill my kanz as they were charging across the battle field. He managed to wipe out one of the boy units with his last remaing guard unit. My kanz then got in range of demolisher, assaulting and wrecking it, with my lootas immbolising other russ that was wrecked after an assault by the remaining boyz. The the grotzooka unit then shelled and assault the final guard unit wipping it out. All over in 4 turns with a win to the orks.

Game 2- three objects spread across the board diagonally, pitched battle.
Opponent: Space wolfs
This game I made some really stupid mistakes, the biggest of which was not keeping my big mek in range of the kan units from the second turn, allowing my opponent to detroy 4 kanz on the second turn, and getting a 30 man boy unit tied in combat with a dreadnaught for 4 turns, and
allowing the other 30 boyz to be wipped out my long fangs with 5 rokkits launchers. However the resilience of the army paid off and I in the fifth turn the second boy unit managed to finally kill the dread, turn around and wipe out the his two of his troop units sat on nearby objectives. The gretchin came on in the fifth and claimed objective in my deployment zone, and the severly depleted boy unit managed to survive a turn of 5 frag missiles and claim the centre objective, as the lootas blew up the rhino parked next to it. The game went to 7 turns and I won with two objectives to one - it was a very close game, partly caused by the stupid errors made early one,
but it did prove again that the army can be very resilient and has massive strength in numbers.

Games 3 - single objective in the center of the board - pitched battle.
Opponent - imperial guard, 2 vendetta, 1 valk, veteren squads. I ran the same tactic as above with the boyz deployed behind a wall of kanz. I won the roll off, and basically ran the bulk of the army forward, leaving the gretchin in reserve, and the lootas deployed in some woods. The lootas managed down the valk in the first turn, remove the nasty missle pods, he decided to concentrate on killing off the kanz first and managed to whip out 4 in the first turn. I hit his lines on turn three with the help decent waagh rolls and massacred the bulk of the infantary. This left one boy unit at almost full strength and the other about about a fifth strong. I then made my way back to the centre objective. The gretchin also making their move for the objective turn 4. Both of the vendettas were imbolised by the lootas (one unfortunatly on the obective), this was assaulted by the small boy unit blowing up and killing and them and also the three gretchin,
forcing them to take a test (they held). The full boy unit then reached the objective and there was nothing the reminent of his army could do to clear them. The game ended with a win to me

I ended the tournament in second place (out of about 20 odd people), picking up a £30 voucher, but unfortunatly no trophy! I finshed on the same points as the winner, but was edged out as he had a slightly better painting score. The winner is good mate of mine, and we both agreed that it was funny, but my army is much better painted!

Good tournament though and I was happy to come second, and very impressed with the orks first outing. Didn't actually get any pictures from the tournament, but I did take some full army picture which I'll post up this afternoon.

don't give you 5 lootas in a box)

10 Gretchin with Runtherd
3 X Kanz with Rokkits - 150pts

Gretchin!

Below are my finished Gretchin squad, I'm not a 100% happy with these, it appears these guys have a few odd molding issues with them that I didn't really notice until I started to painted them, but they look prety good from about a foot away and the completed bases really unifies them. I have finished my secon Killa Kan Squadron and will post some pictures soon.

This is my second painted Killa Kan squadron, I've decided to fit these with Grotzooka. Awesome gun. Really love these Kan models, i''m tempted to buy another box to play around with a few more dynamic poses.

Photo day

Had a proper day of taking photos of all the orks done so far. I've still got plenty to paint though so when i'm through posting the stuff I've finished I can post some step-by-step of of the unfinished boyz and kanz.

After playing a few games with the list, I felt it I needed a cheap troop unit I could leave sat back on my home objective. So attached is also a picture of a work in progress 10 man grot unit.

So here is the rest of the rokkit killa kan unit, and WIP grot unit.

Big Mek with Kustom Force Field

The obvious addition to make the footsloggin boyz and kanz work would be a Big Mek with Kustom Force Field, so here is mine, painted in the same scheme as the boyz and kanz. He provides a nice 4/5+ cover save to the green tide. The only model based so far is the Warboss, with a simple astronomica/codex grey dry brush, and finished with bit of static grass.

Test Killa Kan

My first test Killa Kan, decided to go with a similar scheme as the boyz and Warboss - decided from a few practise games that Rokkits on at least one squad of Kanz works really well.

Really pleased with the simiplicity and effectiveness of the scheme.

Ork Warboss

Most of the boyz for this army came from Black Reach box sets (from various people), and came with a Ork Warboss. I didn't like the actual head for this model, so I swapped it for a standard nob head.

My first orks

First Boyz squad - I wasn't particularly bothered about choosing a certain clan for this army, so I literally just made them up as regular boyz, then picked a foundation colour I liked for the shoulder guard and anything else where I thought a bit of colour was needed.

Before applying the base coats, I gave the boyz a spray undercoat of Chaos Black, followed by a Tin Bitz, Boltgun Metal and Chainmail on the metal drybrush.

Since painting these, I've retrospectively gone back and removed the mold lines!

Wrath of Kan

I Started the Orks for a 500pt campaign that was ran at my local club (see sig), as a veteren Tau player I was looking forward to playing an army that enjoyed CC rather then constantly trying to escape from it. The campaign was 500pts, but you had 750pts that you could choose from to make a force for each game. I stuck with a simple core of two large boy squads (inc nob PK), led by a weirdboy. I enjoyed a lot of sucess with this "too many boyz to kill list". I therefore decided to expand to orks with a hope of making them in to a new tournament list for the GT (well until they ruined the the GT with no final).

I'd had been thinking about a maxed out boyz/kan list for a while, a walking wall of av11 sounded good and the general list in my head seemed fluffy and characterful without being cheesy, or the boring battlewagon spam. However not really wanting to spend £100 on dodgy GW metal (i've heard the Kan horror stories) I waited and even considered calling in my free commision with my good friend Col.G to make some scratchbuilt kans. However I was rewarded a few weeks later when rumours surfaced of a new plastic killa kanz being released in March:- I therefore became the owner of 9 Kanz on the 6th of March. Having not really painted a new army since the Tau (except a long term Lizardmen and Daemon hunter project), I was looking to do the orks
well, but did not relish the idea of painting 90+ boyz. I was advised to try out the "new" foundation paints and washes - and I was really amazed by the results.

So anyway, that was several months ago and here is some of the progress I have made so far. My original goal was 1500pts by October (first GT heat), however with my new found enjoyment of painting I think that will easily be achievable.

The core of my 1500pts:
3 x 30 boyz with nob upgrade, powerclaw and boss pole.
3 x 3 Kanz with a combination of rokkits and Grotzooka.
